A Visit To
Mamoiada
We got up early in the morning because we were planning on doing a nice tour of Nuoro and then Mamoiada, but in the end, as always, we left late and went straight to Mamoiada. 😊
Why this destination? Well, our uncle wanted to buy some wine to bring to Rome and we suggested visiting the Giuseppe Sedilesu Winery and then seeing if he would like some labels to take with him.
The town itself is very cute, small and cozy, but above all it is the town of the Mamuthones, which are typical masks of the town, even if calling them just masks is very simplistic (but this is not the time to talk about the Mamuthones).
But let’s go in order…
We arrive in Mamoiada and immediately find the cellar set in a fairly wide street in the town and where there is usually space for the car without problems.
We are welcomed with great kindness by the grandchildren of Mr. Giuseppe Sedilesu (who, among other things, we have also seen in person), who with great passion and great competence, and without an appointment, show us the various labels of their production, tell us the history of the cellar and its wines, among other things opening up two wines for us to taste, a red one the Grassia and a white one the Perda Pintà, both truly exceptional.
In the end we took away a mixed carton of wine for the Domo Achenza, while our uncle had a few more to take to Rome.
We have been left with the feeling of people who really love their work, who love to tell their guests about themselves, but above all of simple people who are enthusiastic about carrying on the work created by their grandfather, improving and modernizing it wherever possible.
Obviously it is a visit that we recommend everyone to do, you can find more info on the page of our website created especially for the Giuseppe Sedilesu Winery.
Our visit to Mamoiada, however, does not end here.
Inside the cellar hall there was a mask of a Mamuthones and we inquired where it could be a certain Franco Sale, a craftsman who produces the typical masks, who was mentioned to us in Oristano before coming to Mamoiada (to be precise by Vitagliano Manis who makes the masks of the Sartiglia of Oristano).
To our great pleasure the laboratory was right in the street parallel to the cellar, a few steps away, and what do you do? Aren’t you going to pay him a visit?
Even here we went without an appointment and this little man who was initially a little wary welcomed us, he was certainly studying us to understand what we really wanted (great Franco!!!), but then he opened up and told us his whole story, the story of the laboratory and the history of the Mamuthones.
It was a wonderful experience here too, and after several photos, including some with the mask worn and two masks bought, and with the promise of returning and advertising it at the Domo Achenza we left, heading towards Oliena for lunch.
Obviously we also got stuck in the streets of the town. Therefore, be careful to listen to the navigator as much as possible and if you do not know the road well, always stay on the main road and always ask for information.
One last thing I wanted to suggest to you: the Sedilesu and Franco Sale winery can be found all year round in Mamoiada, but if you manage to go during the town’s carnival I assure you that you will have a fantastic experience!
As always, we are waiting for you at the Domo Achenza…
